Boarding Kennel

A boarding kennel is a purpose-built facility where dogs stay overnight in dedicated runs or kennel buildings with on-site staff. It is regulated under the boarding-kennels activity of the Animal Activity Licensing scheme.

Boarding kennel operators must meet detailed minimum standards for kennel size, surface materials, ventilation, drainage, temperature, vaccination requirements, and staff training. Each kennel run must allow each dog to stand at full height, lie down, stretch out, turn around, and walk.

A licensed kennel may hold dozens of dogs at once across separate runs. They are typically located outside town centres on larger sites with secure exercise areas. They suit fit, sociable dogs who tolerate a kennel environment.

On our operator profiles we identify each operator’s licensed activities and surface whether they hold a boarding-kennels activity, a home-boarding activity, or both.
