Christmas and School-Holiday Dog Boarding Costs
Dog boarding over Christmas and school holidays costs significantly more than at other times of year — typically 10–30% above standard rates at many operators. Availability is also limited and most operators book out months in advance. This guide explains the Christmas surge and how to plan around it.
Why Christmas is the most expensive time
Boarding kennels and home boarders have fixed capacity. At Christmas, demand far exceeds supply — particularly for the Christmas week and New Year. Operators apply peak-period surcharges to manage demand and reflect the additional staffing costs of covering the holiday period.
Typical Christmas surcharges
In our dataset, peak-period surcharges range from 10% to 50% above standard nightly rates, with the highest premiums typically applying to the period 23 December–2 January. Some operators have a flat Christmas rate rather than a surcharge.
Other peak periods
Summer school holidays (July–August) and half-terms (February, May, October) also see elevated demand. Easter week is particularly busy in regions with high school-age populations.
How far in advance to book
For Christmas, book as early as possible — ideally 3–6 months ahead if you have a preferred operator. Popular home boarders and small kennels may be fully booked by August for the Christmas period.
For summer holidays, aim to book 2–3 months in advance.
Alternatives if your preferred kennel is full
Search our database for other licensed operators in your area. Consider a home boarder if you have not before — they may have more availability at Christmas than large kennels.
